Software that holds up after launch.

AppStartDev is a software development company. We build web applications, SaaS products, mobile apps, and the backend systems behind them, for companies that need clear ownership and steady delivery. We run the work end to end: strategy, design, build, review, ship.

Services

One team across web, mobile, SaaS, and everything behind them.

Why teams come to us

Different products, the same three things we get right first.

Scope, clarified

A documented plan replaces moving targets.

Risks, named early

We surface what could go wrong before it does.

Code, reviewed for maintainability

Software that holds up after the first six months in production.

How we work

Clear milestones, working software, steady communication.

We start by understanding the business goal, users, existing systems, and constraints. Then we shape the work into releases, design the product surface, build in focused cycles, and review progress with the people who own the outcome. Communication stays direct throughout the engagement: a named engagement lead, regular reviews, and decisions written down.

01

Discover

Goals, users, systems, constraints, risks.

02

Shape

Release plan, design direction, scope clarity.

03

Build

Focused cycles, working software, regular reviews.

04

Ship & Support

Performance, security, QA, deployment, handoff.

Engineering standards

Code quality is not a cleanup phase.

Production software needs more than screens that look finished. The list below is what we plan for from kickoff, so the application your team has to live with stays usable and trustworthy after launch.

Architecture

Boring choices the next team can hire for. We pick stacks that will still be supported in five years, document the structural decisions, and write down the boundary between modules so it survives staff turnover.

Security

Authentication, authorization, secrets, and audit trails treated as features, not afterthoughts. Threat modeling on the surfaces that actually carry risk. Dependencies kept current and pinned. Production credentials live in a vault, not in chat.

Performance

Hot paths kept short. Database queries explained, indexed, and budgeted. Front-end bundles measured per route. We profile under production-like conditions, not on a developer laptop.

Data integrity

Migrations are reversible. Schemas are versioned. Foreign keys are enforced. Append-only logs for sensitive actions. Backups verified by restoring them, not by checking that a job ran.

Observability

Logs, errors, and key metrics built in from day one. Alerts that page someone, with runbooks attached. Dashboards that explain why an outage happened, not just that one occurred.

Handoff & docs

A README that gets a new engineer running locally. A runbook for the operations the team has to do. ADRs for the decisions that took an hour of debate. Everything your team or another vendor would need to take the project over without a translator.

Playbook

See how we work, in writing.

The Playbook has sample versions of the documents you'd actually receive on an engagement: an audit memo, an architecture decision record, a weekly status update, and a handoff checklist. The fastest way to judge how a team thinks is to read what they write.

Weekly status updateSample  ·  Week 06 of 14

Fieldline — technician portal

Prepared for: D. Whitfield, VP Operations  ·  Rev 6

Shipped this week

Technician roster import with duplicate detection, job assignment screen with an offline queue, append-only audit log on status changes.

Decision needed

By ThuCan a dispatcher reassign a job a technician already started? Changes the state machine, cheaper to answer now than in week 10.

Project audit

If another vendor left you with a project nobody wants to open.

Half-finished features, a repo with no documentation, hosting nobody set up, a backlog full of vague tickets. We've seen it. Before you commit to a rebuild, get an honest second opinion on what the project actually is and what it would take to make it useful.

01

Audit

Repo, hosting, deployment pipeline, backlog, and credentials. We tell you what is actually there, not what someone claimed was there.

02

Written assessment

Security risks, technical debt, gaps between what was promised and what was built, and what is salvageable.

03

Recommendation

Repair what works, stabilize what is critical, rebuild what is beyond rescue. With effort estimates and trade-offs.

Working together

How the working relationship runs.

Engagements go well when both sides know what they're responsible for. Here's what you can expect from us, and the short list of what we need from you to move quickly.

What we bring

  • Product input alongside the engineering, not just ticket-taking
  • Direct communication with the people actually running the work
  • Decisions written down, so nothing lives only in someone's head
  • Code reviewed for the version of the product that comes next

What we ask of you

  • Access to someone who knows the business rules
  • Decisions when we surface them, so the work does not stall
  • The real constraints on budget, dates, and existing systems
  • Honest feedback at the reviews, early rather than late

About

Built by people who genuinely love building.

AppStart was founded in 2017 with a simple belief: great technology starts with great people.

We're a diverse group of software engineers, hardware specialists, infrastructure experts, and AI developers who enjoy solving hard problems and turning ideas into technology that works in the real world.

Our team brings together 30+ years of combined founder experience building enterprise software and hardware solutions across finance, construction, oil & gas, healthcare, transportation, and other demanding industries.

Over the years, we've built and supported technology across finance, reporting, music, ticketing, scheduling, CRM, gaming, and enterprise applications. Today, we're pushing further into robotics, Agentic AI, intelligent automation, and custom hardware-software integrations.

But AppStart is about more than technology.

We believe in developing people while building products. Through relationships with colleges and technology institutes across the U.S. and neighboring countries, we've created opportunities for talented students and recent graduates to gain real-world experience, strengthen their skills, and work alongside experienced engineers.

Our people come from different backgrounds, disciplines, and places—but we share the same mindset: take pride in the work, solve the problem, and deliver something that makes a measurable difference.

We don't just write software. We build the systems, infrastructure, hardware, and intelligence that help businesses move forward.

If it needs to be built, integrated, automated, or brought to life—we're ready to build it with you.

FAQ

Common questions.

What kinds of software do you build?
Web applications, SaaS platforms, mobile apps, and the backend and infrastructure behind them. If it needs to run reliably in production and someone has to maintain it after we're gone, it's in scope.
What does communication look like during a project?
A named engineer as your point of contact, a working build every Friday, and a written status update covering what shipped, what slipped, and what we need from you. Nothing important lives only in someone's head.
Who will we be working with?
The person who designs the schema and writes the parts that are hard to change later — not an account manager relaying messages from a team you never meet.
Can you take over a project another agency started?
Yes. We start with a fixed-fee audit rather than a rebuild quote, because most inherited projects are more salvageable than the client fears, and a rebuild estimate given before anyone reads the code is a guess dressed up as a number.
Do you provide fixed bids or ongoing teams?
Both. Fixed bid when the scope is genuinely clear after discovery. Time and materials with a written cap when it isn't. We'll tell you which one your project actually is rather than quoting a number and billing change orders against it.
What do you need before giving a proposal?
A short call to understand the goal, the users, and any existing systems we'd need to work around — enough to scope real milestones, not just enough to send a generic rate card.
